2010 ELECTION: At the annual general meeting held on January 13, the following officers were elected: President: Dorothy Yost; Vice President: Bob Luthardt; Secretary: Diane Craig; Treasurer: Carol Lawson.

A MESSAGE FROM FOL PRESIDENT DOROTHY YOST: We are starting another year, and The Bard Street Bookstore is eager to serve you at the February sale.  We look forward to providing each of you with a supply of books and other media to get you through the rainy season. Some of our ideas for the future include an in-ground sign for the library and improved carpeting for the bookstore.  If you can provide assistance for either of these projects or just have comments, we would love to hear from you.

A MESSAGE FROM LIBRARIAN ELMITA BROWN: The Hermosa Beach Library is grateful for ongoing financial support from the Friends, including funds for poinsettias to brighten the holidays, sponsorship of author Jeri Westerton at the January Book Club meeting, and subscriptions to more than 50 magazines and newspapers for library patrons.

PAWS TO READ: This wonderful program, co-sponsored by the FOL, is in its second year at the Hermosa Library. Every 2nd Saturday, youngsters practice reading skills with attentive Therapy Dogs as patient listeners. Call or stop in to reserve your child’s turn to Sit, Stay, and Read to a trained dog.

2009 CHILDREN’S BOOKMARK CONTEST WINNERS: FOL President Dorothy Yost presented the following students with Barnes & Noble gift cards at the City Council meeting on January 26: Elle Marine, Taylor Ettley, Angeli Murray, Kira Levin, Isabella Polizzotto, and Beau Staso. Funds for the cards and for printing the winning entries come from book sale proceeds and Friends of the Library membership dues.

RIYO SHIMANE (NOVEMBER 21, 1920–DECEMBER 3, 2009): We will all miss Riyo, who worked as a Hermosa Beach Library aide for over 34 years. She knew the regular library patrons’ names and interests and made everyone feel special. Her work ethic and love of books, movies, people, and life set an example we won’t forget.
