FICTION & NONFICTION, PAPERBACK & HARDCOVER: By now you know the prices at our book sale are beyond reasonable. Paperbacks start at 25¢ and never cost more than $1. Most hardcovers are 50¢; newer titles (2009 & 2010) are $1, as are DVDs. Put your eWhatever or iWhatever to sleep--or stick it in its charger--and carry around a real book! That way others can see what you’re reading and be impressed. This month all paperback and hardcover titles by Fern Michaels are free.

THE YALE UNIVERSITY SHAKESPEARE: The set we have for sale is almost complete. It contains 38 of the original 40 volumes (Love’s Labour Lost and Measure for Measure are missing), bound in stylishly faded blue. Similar in dimensions to the original Kindle, each volume measures 4.5” by 7” and thus fits handily in a purse, backpack, bike basket, or large pocket. The elegant typeface is sized to make reading a pleasure. This collection is an incredible bargain at $20 for all 38 volumes.

CHRISTMAS BY THE BOXFUL: The holidays are almost upon us, so take advantage of the many seasonal entertainment, craft, recipe, and story books donated to the book store over the summer. Everything is sized, categorized, and organized; it’s easy to find exactly what you need before you hit the craft stores and malls.

CHILDREN’S SPECIALS: Popular books in the Children’s Corner include many Magic Tree House, Animal Ark, and American Girl books, most selling for 25¢. A 6-volume American Girl set is just $1, and scads of holiday-themed books, videos, games and puzzles are irresistibly displayed and priced.

LIBRARY NEWS:County Librarian Elmita Brown has used proceeds from recent FOL book sales to purchase 3 book trucks, new (rental) DVDs, best-sellers from Barnes & Noble, and display frames for flyers. Katherine Mowery, the new Children’s Services Librarian, came to us from the Carson branch and began working at the Hermosa Library on July 27. Stop by to welcome her and to pick up a flyer about the 2010 Children’s Bookmark Contest. The theme is “Swing into Reading,” entries must be drawn in black and original (no copyrighted characters), and the deadline is October 30..

THE LAST SATURDAY SALE IN 2010 will be on DECEMBER 18 from 9 AM to noon. All books by Robert Ludlum will be free--your chance to fill in the gaps of Jason Bourne’s identity quest.

SALE DATES IN 2011: Monthly sales on every third Saturday are going to continue next year. Mark your calendars now: dates for the first six months will be January 15, February 19, March 19, April 16, and May 21. After this year’s November 13 sale, hours will be 9 AM to 12 noon for members and nonmembers alike.
