GOOD NEWS: WE’RE STILL HERE!: As Borders disappears and Either/Or becomes a distant memory, the Bard Street Book Store continues to flourish. Our monthly Third Saturday sales are growing in popularity, and Monday mornings are still well attended. Prices hold steady at just 25 cents for most paperbacks, 50 cents for most hardcover fiction & nonfiction, and $1 for recent titles (2010 & 2011) and DVDs. New customers are always welcome, so come in and browse––you'll be surprised at the treasures that turn up in this jewel of a bookstore. As a bonus, check the FREE cart on your way out.

A MESSAGE FROM FOL PRESIDENT DOROTHY YOST: Thanks to so many who donate books, DVDs, audiobooks, and CDs to the Bard Street Book Store. Because of you, we are able to replenish the stock in this wonderful facility and raise funds for our library’s acquisitions and programs. Please continue to remember us when you clean out your closets and bookshelves. When we receive multiple copies of popular titles, we have been sharing donations with Friends of the Library groups in Carson, Gardena, Hawthorne, Lawndale, and Cudahy. Finally, don’t forget to use the coupon on page two of your newsletter to renew your 2011 Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library membership (there’s also a coupon on the hbfol.org web page under members). 100% of your dues supports the library and ensures its future.

SUMMERTIME CLEARANCE: Elegant black Friends of the Library t-shirts and sweatshirts are just $5 apiece during this special sale. Sizes are mostly Large through XX-Large. Our talented volunteer Sue De La Camp has converted several of these garments into handsome, practical aprons and has offered to provide instruction should anyone else wish to do so.

CHILDREN’S SUMMERTIME SPECIALS: Stay-at-home activity books on offer include cookbooks for young chefs-to-be, crafts, and lots of Japanese-style illustrated novels. On a scholarly note, we have books on California missions, the Civil War, American history, American Indians, and biographies of American Presidents.

FOR MORE SALE INFORMATION: Please call Carol Lawson, Book Sale Chairman, at 310-372-2610 or call the Hermosa Beach Library at 310-379-8475.

MONDAY BOOK STORE HOURS: 9A.M. - 12 NOON (CLOSED ON ALL MONDAY HOLIDAYS) Large book donations may be brought to the Bard Street address during these hours. Call Carol Lawson at 310-372-2610 to arrange for delivery at another time.  Book donations and FOL membership dues can also be left at the Hermosa Beach Library during open hours.

BENEFITS WITH FRIENDS: Proceeds from the Bard Street Book Store, added to interim sale shelves and $1-per-day rentals of newer DVDs, provided nearly $4,000 in May 2011 to purchase children’s books, best-sellers, travel books, and more DVDs. Also this year, the Evelyn Belasco Memorial Fund has provided over $2,000 for six weeks of entertainment during the ever-popular Friday afternoon Summer Reading Program.

TEEN TERRITORY UPDATE: The HBFOL has contributed over $2,500 to furnish books, furniture, and an appropriately themed surfboard sign for this inviting new addition to the Hermosa Beach Library. Look for an announcement of its grand opening (with refreshments, of course) sometime in August, hosted by County Librarian Elmita Brown and staff, Children’s Librarian Katherine Mowery, and Friends of the Library officers and volunteers.

ELECTION ALERT: If you are interested in becoming an HBFOL officer, you are invited to submit your name to Gillian Miller, head of the nominating committee, before the November 2011 Membership meeting. Come to the next meeting on August 17, leave your name and phone number for Gillian at the Hermosa Beach Library, or stop by the Bard Street Book Store during Monday morning open hours to leave your contact information.
