FICTION & NONFICTION, PAPERBACK & HARDCOVER: Paperbacks start at 25¢ and never cost more than $1. Most hardcovers are 50¢; newer titles (2010 & 2011) and most art books are $1, as are DVDs. Audiobooks on CD & tape present even more possibilities for reading while you drive, walk, or work out. Come early to peruse the Children’s Corner for cards and games in addition to gently used individual titles and sets. Finally, don’t forget to check the Free cart just outside the door. Recent offerings include popular fiction, cookbooks of many countries, and at least one self-help book by Oprah Winfrey!

VALENTINE’S DAY: It’s always the right time for gifts from the heart. Romance novels and poetry collections are a longer-lasting way to show you care than candy or flowers. Browse and buy from our well-stocked shelves and take home bookloads of love.

A MESSAGE FROM FOL PRESIDENT DOROTHY YOST: This year has already brought about several improvements in the amount of time we are able to open the Bard Street Book Store to the community. Also we now have wall-to-wall carpeting, which is deeply appreciated by our patrons and our wonderful volunteers. Please visit more often to buy and donate books, and tell all your friends that we are open every third Saturday and almost every Monday too. Finally, please support us by renewing your FOL membership for 2011.

BOOK SALE BENEFITS UPDATE: Bard Street Book Store receipts continue to provide much needed items for the Hermosa Beach Library. In November and December of 2010, County Library Manager Elmita Brown and Children’s Librarian Katherine Mowery spent over $3,000 of Friends of the Library funds on books and DVDs for the children’s and young adults section and for the general collection. Also Elmita applied for and received two grants from the L.A. County Library Foundation totaling $2,000 to develop a “Teen Territory” separate from younger patrons, and the FOL has provided an additional $2,000 in matching funds. When the section is finished, the Friends plan to sponsor an open house to celebrate the improvement.

2010 HERMOSA BOOKMARK CONTEST WINNERS: Elle Marine, Hannah Marine, and Beau Staso were all winners in their grade categories; Sofia Beck and Audrey Ahrens were runners-up. Each one received a $20 Barnes & Noble gift card donated by the Friends of the Library, along with a gift bag of prizes from the County & the contest sponsor, Pentel Arts (bags were also provided by the FOL). The winning bookmarks, printed thanks to FOL funding, are available in the library. Hannah’s entry was later chosen 4th District winner in the 3rd-5th grade category by Supervisor Don Knabe. Her bookmark will be printed by Pentel and will be available in the library beginning in April along with bookmarks from all the County winners.
