HOLIDAY BARGAINS
Halloween costumes and candy have been on display at Costco, Target, etc. since late summer, so it must be time to shop for the gift-giving season. Check out the box of “little treasures” books near the entrance, priced from 25¢ to $1. Also gift-appropriate are near-new hardcover novels, biographies, books on trivia, puzzles, urban legends, travel, cooking, and gardening. Most paperbacks, CDs, and DVDs are 50¢, most hard covers $1.

CHILDREN'S CORNER SPECIALS
Lots of possibilities in this section to keep everyone well-read and amused, including books on crafts to use independently or with an assist from visiting grandparents. In the adjacent Animals section, pay special attention, all frog-, toad-, snake-, iguana-, and bearded dragon-lovers! We have a number of books from the Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet series, priced in pet stores starting at $12 apiece and at our book store for $1 per title.

E-BOOK SALES SLIP, AND PRINT IS FAR FROM DEAD
So says the New York Times, which reports that E-book sales fell by 10% in the first 5 months of 2015. “Independent bookstores, which were battered by the recession and competition from Amazon, are showing strong signs of resurgence,” according to the American Booksellers Association. All the more reason to give your e-reader a rest and visit the Bard Street Book Store, the only remaining book store in Hermosa Beach.

A NEW HOME FOR THE CHILDREN S MURAL
The mural by artist Vicki Timmons, until recently a highlight of the Children's Section inside the Hermosa Beach Library, is now on display inside the Bard Street Book Store. Many thanks to HBFOL President Robert Luthardt and to volunteers Gillian Miller and Pat Woolley, who spearheaded the effort to preserve and mount this unique local treasure.

DONATIONS OF DONATIONS
We occasionally find a home for large collections that require a more specialized audience. Therefore, the HBFOL recently donated many boxes of books in French appropriate for various ages levels to Le Lycée Française in West Los Angeles. Books donated to the HBFOL will always find a good home.

BOOK SALES, MEMBERSHIPS, AND SPECIAL DONATIONS: WHERE THE MONEY GOES
The Hermosa Beach Library continues to benefit from proceeds of the Bard Street Book Store. Between June and October, the FOL provided entertainers for the Children's Summer Reading Program ($1,800), reading materials for children and adults ($2,000), gift cards for Adult Summer Reading incentives ($100), and subscriptions to over 50 newspapers and periodicals ($2,800). An additional $2,000 donation from the Hermosa Beach Moms Club benefited the Children's Section in the form of read-along books, board books, beginning readers, and a special Balloon-Twisting Workshop in August presided over by Mr. Twister. And retiring City Council member Michael DiVirgilio made a generous one-time contribution to the HBFOL for the library's further benefit.
