SMALLER SPACE, BIGGER BARGAINS
The Bard Street Book Store has been in its new space for over a year, and customers report that it is now much easier to browse the shelves and find exceptional buys. Inventory turns over much more quickly, and new book donations are sorted and displayed several times a week. Each section (hardcover & paperback fiction, poetry & drama, biography, business, travel, etc.) is clearly labeled and impeccably organized. Prices have not changed and remain the lowest in the South Bay. Most paperbacks and DVDs are a spectacular bargain at 50¢, most hard covers $1.

MOTHER'S DAY GIFT SUGGESTIONS
Of course you plan to take your mother––or someone else's––to brunch, lunch, or dinner on May 10. And of course you will be shopping for flowers, candy, cologne, or some other ephemeral expression of love. But how about adding a more permanent gift? We have many hardcover cookbooks in excellent condition, including classics like The Joy of Cooking and the Good Housekeeping Cookbook, as well as books on ethnic cuisines and individual meal components (soups, salads, breads, desserts). Books on gardening are another good choice, as are travel guides for adventurous moms planning a trip or cruise.

BOOKS FOR CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS
Vampires are alive (so to speak) and well represented in the front section devoted to younger readers, and so are Eragon and the Wimpy Kid. Books in these popular series and a number of others are currently available on our shelves in hardcover as well as paperback. Adjacent sections on animals and sports, including biographies of well-known athletes, are also worth checking out. And it's never too soon to lay in a supply of reading materials, crafts books, and DVDs for summer vacation.

INSIDE THE LIBRARY
Our new County Library Manager is Kelly Conn, who is filling the vacancy left by Elmita Brown. Kelly is a Southern California native; originally from Camarillo, she earned her B.A. at UC San Diego and her MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) at UCLA. She has worked as Children's Librarian at the West Hollywood and Lennox Libraries and, most recently, as head librarian at the Avalon Library on Catalina Island. Kelly joins Regina Ochoa, our full-time Children's Librarian. Don Gould and Lydia Wang, who have been on loan to us, will be returning to the Manhattan Beach branch when the new facilities are open later this spring.

HBFOL FUNDS AT WORK
In the first three months of 2015, the HBFOL has provided the library with over $1,600 to purchase books and DVDs for children and adults, in addition to paying for most of the library's periodicals and other subscriptions. Also we will be donating $1,550 for entertainment at the popular annual Children's Summer Reading Program, which will take place on Friday afternoons from June 26 through August 21 at 3 p.m.

THE NEXT HERMOSA BEACH FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOARD MEETING WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, AT 2:30 P.M. IN ROOM 4 OF THE COMMUNITY CENTER. ADVANCE NOTICE WILL BE POSTED ON THE HBFOL BULLETIN BOARD INSIDE THE LIBRARY. ALL HBFOL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME.
