HELP WANTED!
The Hermosa Beach Police Department wants to close Bard Street between Pier Avenue and 11th
Place to the public, both pedestrians and vehicles, in order to protect officers from random attacks of
violence and to insure security of ammunition, weapons, and medications. Alternate quarters
proposed so far are inadequate and impractical for our operation, so we would have to close our Book
Store and deprive the Hermosa Beach Library of the many benefits we have been providing, including
magazine and newspaper subscriptions, books and DVDs, entertainment for the children s summer
reading program, refreshments for special Saturday afternoon programs such as the April 8 L.A.
Opera presentation, and the list goes on. Our financial contribution over the past twenty-plus years
exceeds $250,000! The most promising of proposed relocation sites is the north end of the Hermosa
Self-Storage facility, preferably in two prefab structures like those now used by the HBFD on Bard
Street. Please talk to our City Council members to voice your opinion: Mayor Justin Massey, Mayor
ProTem Jeff Duclos, Stacey Armato, Carolyn Petty, & Hany Fangary. Their email addresses are
available at hermosabch.org.

MORE HELP WANTED!
The FOL is in need of a couple of new volunteers to help sort and shelve donated books. It is a
rewarding and enjoyable activity. We are looking for people who could devote a few hours each week
on Tuesday and Friday mornings. No pay, but benefits include hanging out with books and people
who read them (and usually want to talk about them). Drop by the Bard Street Book Store any
Monday morning between 9 and 12 and introduce yourself.

HELP THE GARDEN CLUB WHILE YOU RE AT IT
The Hermosa Garden Club is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. As part of its Diamond Jubilee
celebration, the club is looking for copies of its 40th anniversary fundraising publication, Foods and
Flowers
, which was published in March of 1997 and contains recipes and garden tips. You can bring
donated copies to our book store on Monday or Tuesday morning; several of our volunteers are also
active Garden Club members.

FOLLOWING THE MONEY
Local finalists of the 2016 L.A. County Bookmark Contest were Alexander McBean (2nd Grade,
Hermosa View), Andrea Isabel Gardea (4th Grade, Our Lady of Guadalupe), Owen Heffernan
(6th Grade, American Martyrs), and Brandon Butai (12th Grade, Mira Costa). HBFOL President Howard
Seeb presented the winners with $20 gift certificates at the City Council meeting on December 16.
The Friends also sponsored the December Holiday Cooking Program ($250, plus a $25 gift card for
the performer) and will provide over $2,000 to fund entertainment for the 2017 Children's Summer
Discovery Program (formerly the Summer Reading Program) which runs from June 1 through
August 13. Flyers for this and other Friends-sponsored events will be available inside
the library next month.

GILLIAN MILLER Gillian was a gifted artist and a wonderful friend to all of us. She
earned her Bachelor's degree from the renowned Chouinard Art Institute (now part of California Institute
of the Arts) and her Master's from CSU Long Beach, where she later taught animation. In 1971 she
married Jim Miller and the couple moved to Hermosa Beach. After Jim died in 2001 she began volunteering
at the original Bard Street Book Store and guided it into its current form as a successful, well-organized,
and efficiently run operation. She died in November of last year.

THE NEXT HERMOSA BEACH FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY MEETING WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY,
APRIL 15, AT 2:30 P.M. IN ROOM 4 OF THE COMMUNITY CENTER. THE FINAL
2017 MEETING, INCLUDING ELECTION OF OFFICERS, WILL BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 15. ALL
HBFOL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME.
